EPA Certification for HVAC Technicians

Refrigerants are essential components in air conditioning and refrigeration. Unfortunately, they are one of many substances that damage Earth’s atmosphere. In hopes of reducing or offsetting some of the damaging effects, the United States Environmental Protection Agency introduced the Clean Air Act of 1990 (CAA).

Clean Air Act

One section of the CAA is called the Refrigerant Management Program (or Section 608). In this section updated some regulations on the HVAC industry. The purpose of laws established by Section 608 is to ensure better HVAC training, to hold technicians accountable for the safe handling and disposal of dangerous refrigerants. On Jan. 1, 2018, the law went into effect, requiring HVAC technicians to take an exam for Section 608 Technician Certification.

Pro Tip: Every technician must earn the Section 608 certification before he or she can work.
